"Riders on the Storm" - Two hurricanes in two weeks
Clearwater, Florida, United States. October 10, 2024.
On September 26, a hurricane hit Clearwater while I was in New York and Layla was in Aruba. In fact, I left for a photo shoot in New York a day earlier to avoid the closed airport, and then arrived the day after the hurricane had hit. It turned out to have caused a lot of flooding for the homes closest to the water. Many saw a 4 feet flooding inside their house. The water is gone soon, but the damages sea water create is extensive, and four feet of seawater will touch most things in a home, and kill the landscaping as well.
Several days before the second would hit on October 10, my son gave me a direct order to get into a hurrican-safe hotel 'no matter what.' While smaller in diameter, this one was projected to be Hurricane strength 5, which is quite devastating if it goes through your city - and this one was projected to do exactly that.

Long story short, while bunking up witht he cats in the hotel (and Layla still safe in Aurba), I did a newsletter, "Riders on the Storm" about the brave people of Florida and how beautiful it actually is here, not as dramatic as portrayed in the press in Europe and elsewhere.
The hurricane went 40 miles south of us, and split up when it met land, which meant the force we felt was like a hurricane 1 (40 mph winds and 80-110 mph gusts). This time there was no floods into the houses (the main destruction usually), and no houses blew away, but quite a few trees tilted (a danger one doesn't consider normallhy, even we have quite a lot of big trees around the house).

A force of about 150 men from Colorado Task Force 1 (CO-TF1) and NCR Nationall Correction Facility Officers (as part of an all hands on deck) had been deployed to downtown Clearwater on October 12 with dogs, boats and helicopters to rescue people caught, wounded or dead. It didn't make as much sense at this point, but might have three days prior when then the forecast saud that the hurricane would be category 5 and hitting these exact streets.
