Do I have to use Leica to participate?

Any brand of camera is welcome, digital and film. You might be smitten by the idea of using a Leica during the workshop. No pressure, just lots of fun. Nikon, Sony, Canon, Fuji, Hasselblad et al is commonly seen.

You will learn in this workshop that one of the important elements to dive into photography is feeling inspired (such as being in a new place with new people), and being able to focus on what you want to create (by removing distractions and avoiding busy, happening places).

The workshop also includes time for editing and sharing our photos.

Charleston - This is where our three-day Overgaard photo workshop takes place for a small group of Leica photographers and digital photographers of all ages.

A photograph is the world seen through the artist's soul

There is something only you have, and I am on a worldwide trail to help you find it. If Charleston works for you, there is where it happens.

What you have, and only you, is you. Through the Overgaard workshop we explore and dig out the uniqueness of being you, and the result will be good art that could only be made by you. As simple as that. You will get a living proof that even the others in the workshop have many things in common with you, none of them are like you, and none of them are the same.

The Overgaard Workshop is a mix of street walking, cozy moments hanging out on street corners, having a coffee break and talk about life, enjoying quiet places in the city, indoor photo editing, critique, portrait photography on location – and the always unexpected that occurs when you meet life and people in a city.

The Overgaard Workshop Experiences

"At first I didn't realize what I had learned. The editing, and especially the portrait shooting, brought me a lot. In addition, the workshop gave me something new. I dared to submit a picture to a street art contest! The picture has now been chosen for an exhibition along with fourteen others. Thank you for your influence and the inspiration of your books."
M. K. (Berlin 2022 class)

Passion and energy

"Exactly why these workshops are enjoyable for me: Skill level, gear, years of experience are always trumped by positive energy and enthusiasm. Passion and energy, that's what makes Thorsten’s workshops memorable."
S. C. (New York 2025 class)

How happy I was

"I wanted to tell you how amazed and happy I was with your workshop.
You were a constant professional and quite a guy!"

D. S. (Salt Lake City 2024 class)

A renewed love for photography

"Thorsten, thank you for leading with such deep generosity and care. It was my very first photography workshop, and you made it memorable. I came in nervous, not knowing much about my Leica Q2 – but I walked away with so much more than technical skills. I left with inspiration, confidence, and a renewed love for photography!"
N. S. (New York 2025 class)

I got my enthusiasm for photography back ... Just like that

"Back home from the workshop, I wanted to thank you for the London Workshop.
In your publicity material you say, 'My goal is to instill enthusiasm in any photographer and raise his or her skill level, self-confidence and production volume. And I do'.
Well, you did! It was a great pleasure."

R.H. (London 2024 class)

My wife and I enjoyed meeting you

"My wife and I greatly enjoyed meeting you and the other workshop participants. Your down-to-earth approach to the technical side of photography and philosophy of using great light to find beauty resonates strongly with us. Thank you for bringing us together this week."
J. L. (Salt Lake City 2024 class)

I was able to forget about work for whole 3 days

"I wanted to really thank you for the great three days together.
I learnt a lot of stuff, found back all my pictures, had fun with our group and was able to forget about work for a whole 3 days!"
K. D. C. (Brussels 2019 class)

In the footsteps of a Master of photography ...

"A common mistake when you fall in love with photography is to think that buying gear will bring you talent. Not so. When you're serious about photography, you need to devote quite a few hours, even a couple of days, to learning the craft by observing someone who has honed their own craft for decades, like Thorsten Overgaard.

I had the chance to follow in Thorsten's footsteps during a street photography workshop he organized in Paris, and it really opened my eyes to how to properly look through my freshly bought (used) Leica.

It is the kind of experience that "sticks" with you, leading to hours of photographic pleasure. Not only did I learn about the technique, but I also picked up, almost on a philosophical level, an appreciation of life and light that is part and parcel of the craft of true masters."
R. S. (Paris 2021 class)

Bring a friend or spouse

Bring a friend or spouse to make it an extra-great experience. Take advantage of the fact that the price is almost half of the usual workshop cost.

One of the exciting things in an Overgaard Workshop (that you didn't expect) is the portrait photography part. A few hours where you get your personal crash course in working close with a living person in front of the camera, and how to master the technical perfection of a photo using reflector, light meter, color meter, and how to time the exact right moment to capture the soul of another person. You might also get to experience being in front of the camera, if you like.
