Key West is well-known as home of Ernest Hemingway who lived there with his wife and their three sons. I think it is a given that we will pay the villa a visit and see what we can make of it with our cameras.

Hemingway's villa at 907 Whitehead Street, across from the Key West Lighthouse was a wedding gift from Pauline Hemingway’s uncle. Photo by Joe Knetsch. When the Hemingway family first arrived to Key West they lived in the now a private residence "Casa Antigua" on 314 Simonton St.

The Bermuda of Florida

Key West has an exotic and colorful history over the last 250 years, a sort of drama between Spain, United Kingdom, Cuba and United States; being sold twice in the 1800's and finally being declared American territory in 1922.

The most prominent change to today's Key West probably was in 1934 when President Roosevelt's relief administration decided to transform the dying town into a tourist attraction, "The Bermuda of Florida", which is why it to a large degree is a tourist city these days.

It's called Key West because ...

A "key" is a term used for a reef or low-lying island, and thus there is The Florida Keys of which Key West is a part. There are many areas in the Caribbean referred to as key's as well.

This is where our three-day Overgaard photo workshop takes place for a small group of Leica photographers and digital photographers of all ages.

The weather, the light and the views will be spectacular. I'm excited!

James Bond was here

Some of the scenes of the James Bond movie "A License to Kill" was filmed in Key West, which for us offer another secret assignment to re-capture.

Scenes from A Licence to a Kill was filmed in Key West. Other than the Hemingway house, the harbour where there is now a Thai restaurant was used, as well as a private villa that proudly display a discrete sign.

Harry S Truman was here

American president Truman established a home, "The Little White House" on 111 Front Street in Key West where he spent the winter time working, and also Eisenhower stayed in the house in 1955 to recover.

Yes, Key West actually has an airport!

While tempting to drive to Key West and enjoy the views, there is actually also an airport that offers direct nonstop flights from Tampa, New York, Chicago, Miami, Dallas, Nashville, Washington DC and other airports.

Else there is flying to Miami and drive to Key West, which is also an adventure that beg to be experienced.

The Overgaard Workshop Experience

"At first I didn't realize what I had learned. The editing, and especially the portrait shooting, brought me a lot. In addition, the workshop gave me something new. I dared to submit a picture to a street art contest! The picture has now been chosen for an exhibition along with fourteen others. Thank you for your influence and the inspiration of your books."
M. K. (Berlin 2022 class)

In the footsteps of a Master of photography ...
"A common mistake when you fall in love with photography, is to think that buying gear will bring you talent. Not so. When you're serious about photography, you need to devote quite a few hours, a couple days, to learn the craft by observing from someone who has honed his own craft for decades, like Thorsten Overgaard.
I had the chance to be in the footsteps of Thorsten, during a street photography workshop he organized in Paris, and it really opened my eyes on how to have the proper look through my freshly bought (used) Leica.
It is the kind of experience that "sticks" with you later, for hours of photographic pleasure. Not only did I learn about the technique but I was able to pick up almost on a philosophical level, an appreciation of life & light that is part and parcel of the craft of true Masters."

R. S. (Paris 2021 class)

A photograph is the world seen through the artist's soul

There is something only you have, and I am on a worldwide trail to help you find it. If Key West works for you, there is where it happens.

What you have, and only you, is you. Through the Overgaard Workshop we explore and dig out the uniqueness of being you, and the result will be good art that could only be made by you. As simple as that. You will get a living proof that even the others in the workshop have many things in common with you, none of them are like you, and none of them are the same.

The Overgaard Workshop is a mix of walking about, cozy moments hanging out on street corners, having a coffee break and talk about life, enjoying quiet places in the area, critique, portrait photography on location – and the always unexpected that occurs when you meet life and people in a city.

We traditionally avoid places with crowds, and touyrist spots. The best moments are when we are alone with our group and cameras.

One of the exciting things in an Overgaard Workshop (that you didn't expect) is the portrait photography part. A few hours where you get your personal crash course in working close with a living person in front of the camera, and how to master the technical perfection of a photo using reflector, light meter, color meter, and how to time the exact right moment to capture the soul of another person. You might also get to experience being in front of the camera, if you like.
