Celebrating the 4th of July in the United States
Clearwater FL, United States, July 4, 2026
A 250 year birthday is quite something, and that was waht United States celebrated on top of the usual 4th of July celebration. I took it a bit relaxed and used my Leica M10-P with a Leica 21mm Summilux-M ASPH f/1.4 lens - obviously not intentind go try to capture the fireworks.

"We hold these truths to be self-evident"
July 4, 1776 marks the day the Declaration of Independence was signed. One could say the idea was Benjamin Franklins, and then mainly Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, and Ben Franklin helped edit it. Amongst other things, Ben Franklin formulated the "We hold these truths to be self-evident."
Ben Franklin ended up with his portrait on the $100 bill (even he was never president of the United States). He worked in London and Paris for many years where he formulated the idea of United States becoming independent of England, rather than a colony governed from London. He then traveled to the United States, and the rest is history.

“… endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”
Even the document was signed on July 4, 1776, there was still the war with England in order to achieve the actual independence. The decisive event was the Siege of Yorktown in Virginia on October 19, 1781 under the command of George Washington (who later became the first president). The British recognized the independence of United States by signing the Treaty of Paris on September 3, 1783.

"These United Colonies are, and of Right ought to be Free and Independent States"
All that said, the first emigrants arrived to the United States in 1585 when English settlers established a colony on Roanoke Island (North Carolina), but maybe the emigration settlement most could agree on was "the first," was when pilgrims arrived aboard the Mayflower to Massachusetts in 1607-1620. So in a way, United States was established 419 years ago. From which we can conclude that it is wise to "never ask a lady about her age."

And then, fireworks. Leica M10-P Safari with Leica 21mm Summilux-M ASPH f/1.4. © Thorsten Overgaard.
